Through our Summer Programs, we aim to raise awareness and ignite interest among Black Male high school students by empowering them to make a significant impact academically, professionally, and socially.

BMI MISSION

The mission of the Delaware State University Black Male Initiative Conference is to close the opportunity gap for African American, from school age to career. This national gathering will convene high school and college students, business professionals, educators, government officials and community leaders from around the United States of America in one place the capital city of Dover, Delaware. Additionally, the conference will be systematic and intentional in exploring the importance of education, best practices and choices to increase matriculation, retention and graduation rates of underrepresented students. Ultimately the conference will empower the “total” man and put him a path of wholeness and academic success in the nation and beyond.

Summer Experience Programs

Through our Summer Programs, we aim to raise awareness and ignite interest among Black Male high school students by empowering them to make a significant impact academically, professionally, and socially.

Summer Programs Details & Instructors

College of Business – July 24-August 4th, 2023

It is anticipated the program will operate from July 24 through August 4, with 30 participants in the two-week camp. The target participant group for the summer experience would provide opportunities for underserved male high school students (9th -through- 12th grade) from New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties.

The BMISE at DSU intends to create awareness and stimulate interest among high school students to yield maximum academic, professional, and social impact for black males. As well as inspire black males to attain higher education to become leaders within their organizations or CEOs of their own. 

This experience will serve as an introduction to our Black Male Initiative program at DSU, which is funded by the Executive Leadership Council (ELC). This program provides ongoing support to Black males, helping them improve their GPAs, increase retention rates, enhance graduation rates, and increase participation in internships and leadership roles in co-curricular activities such as organizations, community engagement, and lecture series.

Project L.E.A.D. – July 24-30, 2023

The BMISE program will take place from July 24 to July 30 and is designed for 30 participants attending a one-week camp. This summer experience is specifically created to provide opportunities for underserved male high school students (9th through 12th grade) from New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties.

Ultimately, the aim is to increase the number of Black male educators.
